A Study on Knowledge of Medical Terminology Among Nursing Students


Abstract
Of five categories identified by Safford and Schlotfeldt as essential components of nursing care, teaching and preparation for home care was consistently evaluated by doctors, nurses and patients as being less well accomplished than physical care, emotional care, nurse-patient relationships, or administrative activities. Since preparation of the patient for home c: re is achieved primarily through teaching activities, patient teaching emerges as an im.,irtant component of nursing care to promote optimal health restoration and adaptation.
This study is done to determine difference between nursing faculty perception of nursing students¢¥ knowledge of medical terminology and the actual knowledge of medical terms among students. Paper and pencil test was used with structured test items. The findings in brief are as follows
No respondent answered all 79 items correctly, and no question was correctly answer; -d by all 47 respondents. The range of score was 5 to 66(X=45.66, SD=15.48 ). The highest correct response total for a single term was 44 (pulmonary tuberculosis, caesarean delivery) ; the lowest correct response . total was 4 (Intra-abdominal Neoplasm) (Table 2 and 3).
To test hypothesis, a t-test of the difference between means was used to determin- the difference between the faculty¢¥s expectations of students¢¥ knowledge and the students actual knowledge of medical terms. The mean score of the respondents, 45.66, was compared with a theoretically perfect score of 79, inferred from nursing faculty¢¥s assessment of the to terminology as that which is used most often.
A t value of 14.8 was obtained, which was significant at the .0001 level. The significant difference between faculty perception of students¢¥ knowledge of medical terminology an. the students¢¥ actual knowledge indicates that the students understand medical terms at a lower rate than the faculty¢¥s expect.
